Thirty Years Out - 50 OHs gather to remember Haileybury and celebrate old friendships

On Saturday 15th June 2019, a crowd of 1989 leavers met near King's Cross, London, to celebrate over 30 years since leaving the hallowed Quad of Haileybury. Despite the passage of time, it was clear that every OH's love for a good party is still very much alive!

Planning commenced six months earlier over a drink between Ludovic Veale (BF 85) and Richard Howard (BF 87) when the subject of reuniting the Bartle Frere leavers was discussed. The hunt began to track people down and very soon the invitation was extended to the whole year - and why not!

The use of technology made the search process and communication thereafter much easier. Approximately 80 leavers from that year joined the WhatsApp group, some of whom are based overseas.  On the evening itself, close to half the year (50 people) were able to make it to the venue.

The evening started at 5pm with drinks at Chapel Down Gin Works, where a dozen enthusiastic people arrived early for some of England’s finest wine.  At 7pm they moved opposite to the Rotunda for glass or two of champagne, supplies of which had been kindly donated by the Haileybury Society.  As the evening progressed, the group were served canapes, washed down with wine and beer.

After 30 years we had nothing left to prove, our insecurities and rivalries mostly left behind.  The genuine friendship of those who attended made for an unforgettable night!

Ludovic Veale (BF 85)
